Reminded me of Disney World and the "Swiss Family Robinson Tree House" when I was but a lad. The installation is still a'buildin and late summer should see it completed as a "cresting wave". I recommend it heartily, for the ephemeral artistry and not least for the views.

Tierce : I will see tonight the ravages of dementia when I have dinner, My friiend has gone from being a smart, funny, tennis and book-loving person into a zombie, essentially, cared for by her doting husband who, bless him, cannot bear to put her in a home. There is little chance she will recognize her hostess, none me, and it fills me with sadness and while there is no history of the disease in either side of my family, a sense of dread. What might she be thinking? Or is it all mush? But, as a 'good' Catholic, I know that my distress this evening will free many many souls from Purgatory........

"Frighteningly persuasive" makes me sounds like a bank robber, or a down on his luck nobleman trolling for a rich wife.

Sleep was, in fact, elusive. Unlike the Almighty, I guess we mortals do not get an automatic rest after creating a world.

I believe the doormen reflect the outlooks of the majority of their building's tenants; old money buildings have a polished elan and and evenhanded graciousness, even to tradesmen and the odd, oddly dressed guest. Buildings with a decidedly nouveau riche tenantry assume the air of uneasy, belligerent entitlement, and are as rudely flashy as the contents of their tenants' apartments... and about as inviting.

Dear RJ,

I enjoyed your friend's blog tonight: Mnémoglyphes at neuf ans. For us to take care of our books we need Library Thing. There are so many.

I'm not surprised to recognize some of the books where we share a taste, e.g., Piranesi.

That's the exact same look I have after I withdraw from an ATM and see my balance. Only, my look doesn't make anyone gush.

What a handsome picture! I'm not even talking about the nice touch of green on the machine.

Or it could just be the triumph of "The Age of Hooper", as Waugh put it; middling minds now in control of the world through the accident of war and social change who actively disparage brains in order to cling to power.

I understood the connection to Gran Torino; the same subtext of shifting generations - one which fought in war and had had enough of brutality, pining their humanity on their wives and a placid existence of chess or a perfectly ordered home, and another which knows nothing but the new war of modern, unrelieved daily brutality- a seemingly unredeemable generation, perhaps not unlike the brutal and brutalized Depression/Prohibition generation, which might have sunk further into depravity had the horrors of WWII not yanked the survivors back from the brink.

Regarding 'Lulu': I beg to differ that I am more musical than you; the thought of seeing 'Wozzeck' again gives me an excruciatingly sharp ice cream headache. I am, however, more than willing to see 'Lulu' again (and again and again) if Marlis Petersen is singing the role--she was mesmerizing (and the rest of the cast was equally superb). I owe you, Kathleen, Fossil and Quatorze a debt of gratitude for replacing Curt's unpleasant work-related memories of New York with fond memories of how enjoyable a weekend in the City can be. We will be back and now you all must visit 'Greater Tryon'...
